What is the deal with the iphone 3g reception?

Being a Mac owner, I was just about to pull the trigger on the Iphone 3g. - That is until I noticed all the negative feedback about the iphones reception. A mobile phones number one use is to make and receive calls is it not? If the 3g Iphone really does have reception problems -then why buy it? Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the iphone. I really do want one,-but not at the expense of reliabilty.

  1. I got the 3g on the 11th, great phone, terrible signal strength. I am dropping calls on Edge and barely see 3g switch on, then it is only a bar or so unless I stand right in front of a tower. Whichever network it is on, it is always erratic. I can have 4 bars of Edge and then I sneeze and it drops to NO SERVICE. Truly I am not kidding. No, I did not sneeze on the phone. I am supposedly in "best" coverage for all of AT&T coverage and can't keep a signal to save my life.
  2. The 3G reception really is weird. I will be surfing Safari or on YouTube and it will switch to edge. I always get 1 bar on 3G in any building, but if I'm out driving or out in a field, I get full bars. I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. It's pretty sad when Apple switches to a plastic back to get better antenna reception compared to the 2G Aluminum back that got good reception to begin with. The one thing I complain about is the battery life. It sucks!
  3. I too have one of the new 3G iPhones. I waited the morning it came out and was really excited to get it. But the reception issues are true. My old phone, an older RAZR model, got spotty reception in my house but with my iPhone I have none at all. If I am inside a building there is never more then 1 bar which translates to, "any time now this is going to switch to No Service." It is very frustrating.
  4. A lot of people have been blaming AT&T's 3G network for the phone's weak reception, but as you can find online, people around the world, relying on other networks, are unable to get good service. I was in the same boat as you -- longtime Apple user anticipating an affordable iPhone -- but I have now decided against it. $70 per month, plus text message fees, plus taxes is way too much for a phone that isn't a promise to get great reception, especially since I don't have a landline. My contract with AT&T is up for renewal next month; I'll be keeping my Razr. I would give you this advice: consider the iPod Touch. It's more expensive than the phone, but it's a one-time shot, it's beautiful and reliable, enjoys all the toys at the App Store and can get on the Web with wifi. It's no fun having to carry that and a cell phone around, but at least I know the phone will work at all times. I'm not sure I could say that about the iPhone, and boy does that make me sad. Anyway, here's some further reading. If you choose to buy the phone, good luck to you: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1602608&tstart=0
