How often do the new generation of ipods/itouch come out?

I know that apple releases the new generation of ipod/itouch they double the amount of gig's it has. I was just wondering how often apple releases the new/next generation.

1. They recently released the new ipod touch (upgraded model from original). As to when they're released there's no set timeframe for upgrades, seems to be at Apple's discretion. You can look at websites like macrumors.com they tend to hint about when the new models are coming out and what they might have in them for new features.
2. On average, Apple releases updates to their products every six or seven months approximately. Of course that's average. The Macbook Pro's last update didn't come until nine months after. The Mac Mini's average update is about six months, yet so far, they haven't been updated for a good eight months so far. It's all inconsistent
