How much do I have to pay upfront for the iPhone 3G?

I wanted to buy an iPhone 3G, but I want to know how much I have to pay when I walk into the Apple Store. I want the 16 GB one, so I already know it's $299. But, I wanted to know if I would have to pay for the plan when I go in. I've also heard that the activation fee it put onto your first bill...

1. Depending on your credit, there might be a deposit. Also, I'm sure ATT is tacking on an activation charge.
